Berlin’s economy is increasingly gaining in importance. While its gross value added per capita, €63,065 in 2017, was still slightly below the national average, its GDP has grown more strongly than the national average since 2014. One driver here is Berlin’s start-up momentum. After Bavaria, Berlin had the highest net increase in number of businesses in 2018. The dynamic trend in the number of employees (+ 4.3% in 2017 and +31.3% from 2008 to 2017) is however colliding with increasingly tight office space availability.
